Teething Truths: Myths & Facts Every Parent Should Know

Babies grow so fast it can feel like you blink, and suddenly, they’ve hit another milestone. But one milestone that tends to ruffle the most feathers, both theirs and ours, is teething.

The sore gums, endless drooling, cranky days (and nights!) are enough to test any parent’s patience. Watching your baby struggle through it can be just as hard as going through it yourself. But the truth is, teething is often misunderstood. While those adorable little teeth are definitely worth celebrating, the process of getting them is not always as dramatic as it’s made out to be.

So let’s bust some myths, clear up the facts and help you feel a bit more confident as you support your child through this rite of passage.

Myth 1: Teething causes a high fever

Fact: A mild temp? Sure. A high fever? Not likely.

A slight rise in body temperature can happen due to inflammation around the gums, but anything over 38°C (100.4°F) should not be blamed on teething. High fevers usually point to something else, like an underlying infection. If your baby is burning up, give your paediatrician a call to be safe.

Tip: If your baby seems warm and cranky, try skin-to-skin cuddles and dress them in breathable fabrics. Sometimes, a little comfort goes a long way.

Myth 2: Diarrhoea is totally normal during teething

Fact: Some changes in poop? Maybe. Actual diarrhoea? No.

Lots of drool = lots of swallowed saliva = occasional loose stools. But frequent, watery diarrhoea, especially if it comes with vomiting, fever, or lethargy, is not something teething causes. It’s more likely to be a stomach bug or another issue that needs attention.

Tip: Keep an eye on hydration. If your baby’s not having enough wet diapers or seems extra sleepy, always check in with your paediatrician.

Myth 3: All babies start teething at 6 months

Fact: There’s no set schedule, just the baby’s own timeline.

Some babies start sprouting teeth at 3 months, others do not until 12. A few are even born with a tooth or two (called natal teeth). So if your little one isn’t “on time,” don’t panic. It doesn’t say anything about their development or health.

Tip: Instead of watching the calendar, watch your baby. Are they chewing on everything? Drooling like crazy? Getting cranky at night? Those signs say more than a chart ever will.

Myth 4: Teething babies won’t eat

Fact: They might eat less, but it’s usually temporary.

Sore gums can make sucking or chewing feel uncomfortable, so it’s common for babies to eat a bit less during a teething spell. But don’t worry, they won’t starve themselves.

Try This:

  • Offer chilled foods like yoghurt or fruit purees. The cold helps soothe the gums.

  • Let them chew on a frozen banana (in a mesh feeder).

  • Keep breastfeeding or offering formula as usual.

If the feeding refusal lasts more than 2–3 days, it’s time to check in with your doctor.

Myth 5: Teething gels and numbing agents are safe go-tos

Fact: Many are not safe for babies.

Some over-the-counter teething gels contain benzocaine or lidocaine, both of which can be dangerous for infants and toddlers. In fact, the FDA advises against using them for kids under 2.

Safer Soothers:

  • A clean, chilled (not frozen) washcloth to gnaw on

  • BPA-free silicone teething rings

  • Your clean finger (gently massaging the gums can bring big relief)

  • Breast milk popsicles - yes, really!

Myth 6: Teething = sleep regression

Fact: Teething can cause some sleep hiccups, but it’s not always the reason.

If your baby’s sleep suddenly goes off the rails, teething might be a factor, but it’s rarely the only one. Sleep regressions, separation anxiety, developmental leaps - they all love to show up uninvited, sometimes at the same time.

Tip: If your baby’s sleep is disrupted for more than a few nights, take a look at what’s going on. Is there a change in routine? Are naps inconsistent? Is your baby learning a new skill like crawling? Sleep often dips before a big milestone.

Teething is one of those parenting seasons that can feel endless, but it will pass. While it can come with crankiness, drool-soaked bibs and a few sleepless nights, it’s also a beautiful reminder that your little one is growing and thriving.

So hang in there. Trust your instincts. Ask for help when you need it. And remember, there’s no such thing as a silly question when it comes to your baby’s health.
